About. I'm a Professor of Philosophy and Founding Faculty and Co-Director of the Institute for Practical Ethics.
Other positions include: the Freedom and Responsibility in Science Committee of the International Science Council; Founding Faculty at the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute at UC San Diego; President of the Philosophy of Time Society.
From 1996-2000 I worked in the Department of Philosophy, Logic & Scientific Method at the London School of Economics. I obtained my Ph.D. from Rutgers University in 1997. My main areas of research and teaching include Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Physics, Metaphysics, and Environmental Ethics. For recreation, I do a lot of paddling...a real lot.
News. My book What Makes Time Special? (Oxford University Press, 2017) won the 2018 Lakatos Award and my research won the 2018-19 Chancellor's Associates Faculty Excellence Award in Research in Humanities and Social Science at UC San Diego. This coming academic year I'll do events at Ohio University, Harvard, Columbia, Berkeley, Barcelona, Dublin, Tucson, and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. I teach a graduate seminar (topic tbd) in Winter and Philosophy and the Environment 148 in the Spring.
